Carport Fire Extends to the Attic on Dartmouth

At 1630hrs on Sunday, March 1st, Smithtown’s volunteers were alerted for a reported structure fire at 19 Dartmouth Drive. As the first units were responding a large column of smoke was found to be coming from the direction of the fire and neighboring departments began to be relocated into the area. Upon arrival of 3rd Assistant Chief Daniel Dongvort the alarm was upgraded to a working structure fire as fire was found to have engulfed the car port of the residence and was extending into the attic. First Engine on scene was 4-2-2, whose crew stretched an 1-3/4” line and began attacking the fire, while crews from Engine 4-2-5 stretched a back up line. Mutual aid from St. James, Nesconset & Hauppauge was brought to the scene while Commack FD and Commack Ambulance stood by at Smithtown’s Main Firehouse for any additional alarms. There were no injuries to any civilians and one firefighter suffered a minor injury. The fire was brought under control within an hour and all units operated under the command of Chief of Department Kevin J. Fitzpatrick.  The Town of Smithtown Fire Marshal’s Office and Suffolk Police Arson Squad are investigating the cause of the fire.
