Today we lost one of the best. It is with great sadness that the Smithtown Fire Department announces the passing of Ex-Chief Richard Keller. Chief Keller joined the SFD in 1965 making him nearly a 58 year member. Chief Keller was a charter member of Engine Co. 5 when it was formed in 1966 and served as Captain for two terms and was Chief of the Department from 1981 to 1983. The Chief also served with the FDNY and finished his career as a FF in Hazmat. Chief Keller not only left his mark on the Department but the Volunteer Fire Service as a whole - we are all lucky to have known him and to have worked alongside him. Today is the Chief’s 87th birthday - Happy Heavenly Birthday, rest easy, Chief.
