The Smithtown Fire Department was toned out for a 16/23 (Ambulance requested, Motor Vehicle Accident, Heavy Rescue) at 16:52 (4:52pm) with the location of 560 West Jericho Turnpike across from Lahann's Auto Body.
Upon arrival units went to work on a 3 vehicle MVA with two occupant pinned in one of the cars. Rescue 4-2-9 began the process of extrication of the victims. The passenger door was popped to remove one victim. The roof of the vehicle had to be removed to extricate the driver. The driver of that vehicle was taken to St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center where she was pronounced dead. In total 5 injured were transported to either St. Catherine or the Stony Brook University Medical Center. No report of conditions of the remaining injured at this time.
Working at the scene were Chiefs 4-2-31 (Hansen) and 4-2-33 (Murphy), Rescue 4-2-9, Engines 4-2-4, 4-2-5, Smithtown ambulances 42-6-1, 4-2-6-2 in addition to ambulances from the Kings Park and Nesconset fire departments. Also on scene was Commack rescue and a Commack engine. The engine staged at Jericho and Old Willets Path in the event an EVAC helicopter from Suffolk PD was needed for hospital transport.
The accident is currently under investigation by the Suffolk County Police Department.
