Signal 13/35 - Working Structure Fire

On January 30, 2007 the Smithtown Fire Department was activated at 1600 hours for a report of a garage fire at 10 Highwoods Court. Initial reports could not confirm if the garage was attached or detached. First arriving unit, 1st Assistant Chief Thomas Duckham advised responding units that this was in fact a fully involved structure fire. As 3rd Assistant Chief John Hansen and Chief of Department Jack Harford arrived on scene, SCPD advised that she was not sure if the occupants were out of the house. Due to the heavy volume of fire, an exterior attack with hand lines and master streams was initiated. In addition to the heavy volume of fire, firefighters were confronted with a 500lb. Propane storage container located in the ground next to the fire building. Also, 2- 20lb. Propane cylinders were located under the rear deck with fire impinging on them and their pressure release valves discharging.

Approximately 75 firefighters responded with mutual aid requested from Nissequogue FD, St. James FD, Hauppauge FD, Nesconset FD, and Kings Park FD. A mutual aid ambulance from Lakeland FD was requested to handle stand-by at Smithtown FD headquarters.

Signal 13/35 - Working Structure Fire

On December 6, 2006 at 6:41pm the Smithtown Fire Department was activated for a Signal 13 at 4 Wesley Lane in Smithtown. 2nd Assistant Chief Chuck Duffy upon his arrival, advised Chief of Department Jack Harford, of a heavy smoke condition and to reactivate for a working fire. Upon Chief Harford's arrival he was notified by SCPD there was a possible occupant trapped inside the fire building. First due Engine 4-2-1 arrived and began fire suppression with 3 hand lines being utilized. Interior fire operations under the command of 2nd Assistant Chief Duffy and 3rd Assistant Chief John Hansen made an aggressive interior attack. Hook and Ladder 4-2-7 and Rescue 4-2-9 arrived and performed outside ventilation and primary search. At this time the occupants arrived home and indicated they had left the residence at approximately 5:20 PM. Engines 4-2-2, 4-2-3, and 4-2-4 provided manpower with Fire Medic Unit 4-2-62 providing Medical Assistance. Mutual Aid was requested from Hauppauge FD, Kings Park FD, Nesconset FD, and St. James FD. The house sustained major fire damage and the fire is currently being investigated by SCPD Arson Squad and Town of Smithtown Fire Marshal Office.

Signal 13/35 - Working Structure Fire

On May 11, 2006 at 8:23pm, the Smithtown Fire Department was activated for a signal 13 in the vicinity of Jericho Turnpike and Plymouth Boulevard. Additional calls received indicated a building was on fire at that location. Chief of Department Jack Harford arrived on scene and found a 2 story commercial building with fire on the west side of the building. Initial size up indicated that the complex consisted of two- 2 story buildings connected by a common walkway. In addition, Suffolk County police officers on scene advised the chief that panic alarm was received from one of the units in the complex. First due Engine 4-2-5, Tower Ladder 4-2-7 and Engine 4-2-4 were advised to begin a master stream operation. 3rd Assistant Chief John Hansen arrived and organized an initial search in the unit transmitting the panic alarm. The search was aborted due to the fire load that was in the cockloft resulting in a roof collapse. The fire damage was contained to the west building with the east building receiving smoke damage. Mutual aid units were requested from Kings Park, Hauppauge, Commack, St. James, Nesconset, Nissequogue, and Central Islip-Hauppauge Ambulance Corp. All units were back in service at 00:20 hours on May 12, 2006. The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation by the Town of Smithtown Fire Marshal’s Office and Suffolk County Police Department Arson Squad.

Signal 13/35 - Working Structure Fire

On April 30, 2005 at 15:31 hours, The Smithtown Fire Department was activated for a Signal 13 across from 17 Rainbow Drive. Chief of Department Jack Harford was advised that numerous calls were being received. A working fire was transmitted while en route to the scene. Mutual Aid was requested from neighboring departments for a FAST team and additional resources. Chief Harford and 2nd Assistant Chief Chuck Dufy arrived simultaneously and were presented with a 2 story wood frame residence with extensive fire showing from the rear and 2nd floor of the building. Prior to the initial attack the 1st floor flashed over. The Chiefs on scene were advised that the 1 person was still unaccounted for. With no outside entry to the basement and LIPA electric lines sparking in the rear of the building a decision was made not to make entry. Once fire personnel gained control of the fire a primary search was performed and proved to be negative. The unaccounted person was subsequently located and returned to the scene. Mutual Aid units were requested from Nesconset, Hauppauge, Kings Park, St. James, Nissequogue, and Commack. All units were back in service by 18:00 hours. The fire is being investigated by Town of Smithtown Fire Marshal Office.

Signal 13/35 - Working Structure Fire

At 13:38 hours the Smithtown Fire Department was activated for a report of smoke in the vicinity of Peyton Place and Townline Road. The first responder, operated by Sal Guarnieri Jr., was the 1st unit on scene and indicated there was smoke pushing from the eaves of the 2nd floor. A working fire was transmitted at that time.

Chief of Department Jack Harford and 1st Assistant Chief Tom Duckham arrived simultaneously. The 1st arriving engine (4-2-1) was instructed to provide a supply line from the hydrant and begin an interior attack. Additional Smithtown units (4-2-5, 4-2-2, 4-2-4, 4-2-7) also responded to supplement the initial attack line and provide for ventilation. Mutual aid was provided by Hauppauge FD (Fast Truck), Nesconset FD (engine), and St. James FD (engine) to assist the initial crews at the scene. Kings Park FD provided an engine for stand-by at Smithtown’s Headquarters. Keyspan and LIPA were called to terminate utilities.

Initial indications are that the fire started in the kitchen and traveled to the 2nd floor. The fire is presently under investigation by town of Smithtown Fire Marshal’s office.

The fire was under control at 14:13 hours with all units back in quarters by 15:15 hours.

Signal 13/35 - Working Structure Fire

At 6:40 PM the Smithtown Fire Department was activated for a signal 13 at 45 Eckernkamp Drive. 1st Assistant Chief Jack Harford was advised that a direct call from the residence stated “their house is on fire and are going next door”. Upon arrival Assistant Chief Harford was met by the homeowners on their front lawn where they explained what they heard and saw. After confirming that all occupants were accounted for, the size up revealed a basement fire that was venting through a basement window. In addition stairs to the basement were present from the rear of the structure. 2nd Assistant Chief Tom Duckham brought the crews from engines 4-2-1 and 4-2-5 inside to the top of the stairs. The interior attack teams were met by intense heat and smoke and were unable to make it to the seat of the fire. The decision was made to make entry from the rear stairway. Truck companies 4-2-7 and 4-2-9 arrived with additional units. Kings Park FD was called for a FAST Team, Nesconset, St. James and Hauppauge FD’s provided assistance with manpower. Fire-Medic units 4-2-61 and 4-2-62 provided rehab stations for all the responders. Last unit on scene returned to quarters at 9:50 PM.

Signal 13/35 - Working Structure Fire

On Wednesday December 1st, 2004, at 11:20 PM the Smithtown Fire Department was alerted for a structure fire at 471 Townline Road. First arriving Smithtown Chief Tim Crafts was confronted with a heavily involved private residence. The residence was reportedly a historic structure possibly a 180 years old. Mutual aid was provided by Hauppauge Fire Department with one Engine and a FAST Team. The Kings Park Fire Department stood by with one Engine at Smithtown's firehouse. All of the residents were accounted for with no injuries reported. The residence however was a total loss. Smithtown units operated well into the night.

Signal 13/35 - Working Structure Fire

On July 7th, 2004 at 1343 hours the Smithtown Fire Department responded to a working structure fire on Croft lane in Smithtown. Under the Direction of Chief Timothy Crafts and 1st Assistant Chief Jack Hartford the personnel dealt with not only a rather serious house fire but two 100 Pound Liquefied Petroleum Gas Tanks with relief valves operating due to direct flame impingement. There was no one home at the time of the fire and there were no significant injuries to any firefighters. Assistance was provided by the Kings Park, Saint James, Commack, and Hauppauge Fire Departments. The origin and cause of the fire is under investigation by the Suffolk County Police Arson Squad and the Town of Smithtown Fire Marshals Office.

Signal 13/35 - Working Structure Fire

At 1200 Hours on May 1st, the Smithtown Fire Department was activated for a reported structure fire at 23 Mill Dam Rd. Upon arrival of the first unit, a heavy fire condition was reported. In addition, it was determined that all occupants had safely evacuated the house. Tim Crafts, Chief of the Smithtown Fire Department stated, “The firefighters immediately initiated an aggressive interior attack with two 1 ¾” handlines. An additional 1 ¾” line was put into operation at the rear of the house to protect a large propane cylinder. The fire was brought under control in about 1 hour, but units remained on scene until approximately 2:30pm.”

During the fire attack, 5 firefighters were injured and required transport to the hospital. All were treated for minor injuries and were released.

In all, thirteen units and 50 firefighters responded from the Smithtown Fire Department. The Chief called for assistance at the scene from the Kings Park, Hauppauge, and St. James Fire Departments. On scene Emergency Medical Services were provided by Smithtown, St. James, and Nissequoge Fire Departments as well as the Commack Volunteer Ambulance Corp.. The Chief also called for assistance from the Nesconset Fire Department who stood by at Smithtown’s headquarters in case of another alarm. In addition, the Smithtown Fire Marshal and the Suffolk County Police Arson Squad were requested to investigate the fire.

Signal 13/35 - Working Structure Fire

On March 8,2004 at 10:12 AM, the Smithtown Fire Department was dispatched for a Signal 13 at 499 Lawrence Road. Smithtown Fire Marshal Andrew Bronfman was in the area and advised Smithtown F.D. Dispatch that a series of storage trailers were involved and reactivate a Signal 13/35. First arriving units encountered numerous obstacles including exploding propane tanks and unmarked 55 gallon drums stored in the trailers. Capt. John Hansen initiated a hose line attack utilizing foam. Mutual aid was provided by Commack, Kings Park and Hauppauge. Command was assumed by 1st Assistant Chief Jack Harford. Suffolk County Haz Mat Coordinator was requested to assess the conditions and contents of the drums. All units were back in service at 13:32PM.

Signal 13/35 - Working Structure Fire

The Smithtown Fire Department, under the command of Chief Crafts, battled this blaze at the Maple Avenue Apartments. Four apartments were heavily damaged and the remaining had smoke and water damage. Mutual Aid to the scene was provided by Hauppauge, Nesconset, Saint James, and Kings Park Fire Departments with Nissequogue FD standing by at Smithtown’s main. The fire was under control in about one hour.

Signal 13/35 - Working Structure Fire

The Smithtown Fire Department responded to # 16 Harloquin Drive in Smithtown. Arriving Smithtown Chiefs and Apparatus encountered a heavy fire condition at this residence. Mutual Aid was provided by Saint James for a standby at their Headquarters and a FAST Team from Hauppauge to the scene. Smithtown Chief of Department Timothy Crafts was the Incident Commander.
