Fire Prevention

One of the most important aspects of firefighting is preventing a fire before it starts. The Smithtown Fire Department is committed to the education of adults and children in preventing and surviving fires and other dangerous situations. We have an extensive fire prevention program that utilizes a variety of methods to teach fire safety to the general public as well as our own members.

Throughout the year, we provide fire safety lectures, visits to schools, and tours of the firehouse to various organizations.

The Smithtown Fire Department's Fire Prevention Trailer is used to educate the public on how to safely escape a fire. The trailer has the ability to fill any or all of its rooms with a non-toxic smoke to simulate the conditions found in a fire. With the help of the trailer, participants can see how smoke behaves and learn how to escape as visibility decreases. We bring the Fire Prevention Trailer to schools, houses of worship and public events within the town during the course of the year.

Once a year, the department hosts a spectacular Fire Prevention Day to coincide with National Fire Prevention Week. Our Fire Prevention Day features hands on activities for children, as well as demonstrations by firefighters of the methods that can be used to extinguish fires. There is also a demonstration of how we use the "Jaws of Life" and other tools to extricate victims from a motor vehicle accident.

The department offers a Babysitting course open to anyone twelve years of age and older. Participants are taught how to handle almost any situation that can arise during babysitting. In addition, participants are taught Basic First Aid and CPR skills.
